Catherine Pomerico, mother of six and grandmother of 16, was described by her daughter and granddaughter as "an award-winning mother" who focused her efforts on raising her family and still managed to work full time as an elementary school teacher at Our Lady of Victory in Horal Park.
"This is very unexpected," said Mrs. Pomerico when she learned about being The Leader's Mother of the Year. She was nominated by her only daughter Catherine and granddaughter, also named Catherine.
"There are five generations of Catherines in my family," explained Mrs. Pomerico. The family name began with Mrs.
Pomerico's grandmother and has been passed down to each succeeding generation. "We do have different middle names," she said.
The girls are named after St. Catherine of Sienna, whose feast day is in April. "She had great influence in having the pope move back to Rome from Avignon," explained Mrs. Pomerico, forever the teacher.'
Mrs. Pomerico added that her daughter had a littie bit of St. Catherine's leadership skills. "My daughter is the present regent for the Catholic Daugthers of America here in Freeport," Mrs. Pomerico said proudly.
Catherine is proud of her large brood and feels lucky to have a few of them nearby. Two of her sons, Michael and Ryan, hve in Freeport, as does her daughter, and another
son, Joe, lives in Baldwin.
Her grandchildren, ages 4 to 34, "interact well. It's very interesting when we get together to watch tiiem all," said Mrs Pomerico.
The Pomerico family moved to Freeport in 1956. "I was very pleased to be here," said Mrs. Pomerico. "When we sold our first house in Freeport, we knew we wanted to stay in die community and bought another house here in town." Mrs. Pomerico is still in the house she and her husband Tom bought in 1963. Her husband Tom died in 1998.
Any plans for Mother's Day?
"I don't know," said Mrs. Pomerico. "I'll probably see some of the children. But tiiis honor, well, it really made my day!"
Congratulations to Mrs. Pomerico, our
Mother of die Year, and Happy Mother's Day to all die moms in Freeport and Baldwin.
As Mother of die Year, Mrs. Pomerico will receive the following prizes: a $25 gift certificate to the Imperial Diner in Freeport; a floral arrangement from Terranova Florist; a $50 gift certificate from Vincente Jewelers of Freeport; two dozen donuts for Mom from Dunlcin' Donuts on Atiantic Avenue; a gift certificate for one botde of champagne from Atiantic Bayview Wines & Liquors; one free week for two at World Gym in Wantagh; a $25 gift certificate from The Schooner in Freeport; a $25 gift certificate from Piccolo Restaurant in Bellmore and a year's subscription to The.
