Incinerator debate snreads east
by Laraine A. Milazzo and Laura Schofer
The winds are blowing east... all the way to Bellmore, and with them, talk about the possibility of construction of a trash incinerator in South Freeport.
Derrick Donnelly of the Merrick Gables Civic Association addressed members of the North Bellmore Civic Association at the April 19 meeting to caution residents about the potential problems such a Waste to Energy [WtE] project might present.
"It's unfortunate that we have all of
this hysteria going on," said Mr. Donnelly, who added that no one knows'exactly what is going on since officials in Freeport have been mum on the matter.
Mr. Donnelly explained that a possible trash incinerator that could have advanced technology and produce energy from the waste might not be a bad idea but a dialogue may be needed to make any determination, he said.
Will Freeport take in trash from surrounding areas? How will it be delivered? Perhaps by trucks traveling down Merrick Avenue? Mr. Donnelly
suggested that Freeport could have trash brought in by barges, creating navigational hazards. "What is the carbon footprint for Long Island?" if the plan goes through, asked Mr. Donnelly.
Clearly, Mr. Donnelly did not want to promote NIMBYism (Not In My Backyard), but believes a dialogue with Freeport's Mayor Andrew Hardwick is absolutely necessary.
North Bellmore resident Lisa Schary said that she has worked very hard against pollution. As taxpayers, Mrs. Schary said that the community could
demand a moratorium on the project until an environmental review is made and suggested that residents write letters to the editors of local newspapers to vent their concerns.
Mr. Donnelly urged residents to' write to Mayor Hardwick on the village's official website, www.freeport- ny.com with their concerns and questions about the project.
On Tuesday, April 20, the village posted its official response regarding the incinerator. Additionally The Leader spoke by telephone with Mayor Hardwick.
