Area residents gathered at the Merrick Golf Course Clubhouse last week to find out just how far along is a plan to bring a Waste to Energy facility (WtE) to south Freeport.
Village Trustee Robert T. Kennedy addressed Merrick and Freeport residents from the civic associations as well as local Merrick PTAs. .
"I am not in favor of a traditional incinerator but I've seen zero," he said. "If you tell me this [project] will decrease taxes by 60% perhaps I'll consider it."
Waste to Energy or WtE is a process of creating energy in the form of electricity or heat from incineration of waste material that can be either municipal, industrial or medical in nature.
Trustee Kennedy added that if such a proposal for a WtE project were to be presented to the village trustees, he would "hire the best engineering firms
and want an extensive environmental report."
But Village Attorney Howard Colton told The Leader that all talk of this facility is "premature. We are looking at different ideas and technologies. It runs the gamut from solar power to wind mills. We are considering how we can generate clean green electricity." Mr. Colton added that "the public would have any input on any project in the village."
Meanwhile, Covanta Hempstead, a WtE facility in Westbury, is looking to expand its operation, which now processes 2,505 tons of waste per day into electricity that it sells to the Long Island Power Authority (LHA).
"With the existence of Covanta and a state-of-the-art power plant in Freeport, I have my reservations about a facility like this in Freeport," said Trustee Kennedy.
