Freeporrs 09 First Baby - a road warrior!
it woriis!
by Erin Donohue
The new Nassau County Silver Alert, a program similar to Amber Alert but focusing instead on finding those with cognitive disorders such as autism and Alzheimer's who have become lost, is now up and running - and helping find people. Only 11 states have such a program, and in New York it is active only in Nassau, Suffolk and Rockland Counties.
The Leader has already received two official Silver- Alerts from our area - in which a North Bellmore senior with a cognitive disorder was found - with

alerts coming through a network called SPIN (Security Police Information Network).
SPIN is a multidimensional crime prevention partnership between the Nassau. County Police Department and the private sector that seeks to increase public safety by sharing important and timely information. Anyone can apply to receive SPIN messages by going on the Nassau County Police Department website at www.police.co.nassau.ny.us.
In addition to informative alerts, Nassau County is. exploring a voluntary global positioning systems (GPS)-type technology that would be available to the

county's most vulnerable residents.
Plans are near completion to develop a database in which details about special-needs persons could be downloaded. This information could aid in a quick recovery by law enforcement for finding an individual at a familiar place or favorite location.
When the database is operational, Nassau County plans a media blitz kick-off - and hopefully Ryan Siler of Seaford, who works in Bellmore, will be the first one included in the system.
Last month The Leader sat in on several meetings with local elected officials, authorities and the Siler family to dis-

cuss the program at length and to learn when it might be implemented. A young autistic man, Ryan Siler became lost on •October 6 while traveling on the Long Island Bus system.
Ryan, 18, went missing for about 4 1/2 hours during what usually is a routine bus ride for him.
Ryan's disorder affects his communication skills. He thrives on routine and desires his independence. Ryan has behavioral ticks such as touching his face and his ears or playing with his hands but other than that appears - on the outside - to be like every other person his age. (continued on page 9)
