Freeport through the eyes of young urban designers
by Laura Schofer .
Freeport's Main Street and the Sunrise Highway corridor around the Long. Island Rail Road station have been re-imagined in.25 projects designed by urban and architecture students from the New York Institute of Technology.
Their projects were unveiled on Tuesday at \ht Freeport Recreation Center.
Four months ago, teams of students came to Freeport to tackle the task of creating a 21st Century vision of the village that addresses ecological issues, transportation and urban blight but also respects Freeport's nautical heritage.
One project called for the creation of wind turbines to provide clean, renewable energy for Freeport; another project included a farm. A third project envisioned a forest corridor along Sunrise"
Highway that would beautify and link the north and south parts of the village. More than one project called for the use of light rail, a trolley system,^ and-walking and biking paths .that would extend north and south of Sunrise Highway. .
How about a series of piazzas to link green spaces or a man-made river promenade? How about a floating aquarium or an amphitheater built in a manmade marsh?
Projects also looked to link people and places by creating work and living environments in low-rise and high-rise buildings by the raihoad to encourage more accessible and affordable housing.
Many projects envisioned this area as an ideal place for the development of retail space next to mass transportation in the hope of creating a vibrant downtown environment. , ., ^
