North Main revitalization plan propiised
By Ira J. Schildkraut
Based, on community input at two previous .meetings, the three-tiered teani of Moule & Polyzoides, the Regional Plan Association, and Sustainable Long Island presented a plan for the. redevelopment of Freeport's North Main Street on October 30.
Residents and local political leaders met at the Freeport Recreation Center to discuss the proposal. Evaluating what the. team proposed were several do.zen Freeporters, in addition to Mayor .Andrew Hardwick, Deputy Mayor Robert Kennedy, New York State Assembly Assistant Speaker Earlene Hooper, and Nassau County Legislator. David Denenberg. Funding for the planning came from the village, county, and federal governments.
The proposal includes three phases of redevelopnient, starting with Freeport's Long Island Rail Road station as the core of the plan and then extending northward to the Roosevelt border in a 20-year period.
At the first two meetings problems of crime and traffic guided the design teams in
their 800 hours of, work. Stefanos Polyzoides explained that large malls would not work in. the-area, but the base exists for commercial .development, creating an attractive business destination for shoppers and workers. ',^6 need a serious preservation strategy, not just start tearing down the existing base," the architect stated.
Mr. Polyzoides adrhitted that the negative aspects of crime and traffic had to addressed • first m order t
lighting, sidewalks .with pavers, and antique benches.
-The architect and urban planner also said that traffic on North Main Street had to be addressed. The roadway has to be widened while slowing down the speed of vehicles and reducing the number of them. Streets coming into the railroad station area should be rearranged to ease the traffic flow.

Abrahams and Mr. Denenberg, The funding "will be spread out- over a three-year period and will go toward the renovation and upgrade of the roadway and sidewalks on North Main Street, including brick pavers, decorative lighting, park benches and handsome receptacles," said Legislator Abrahams.
Deputy Mayor Kennedy explained that in addition to funding the rebuilding of North Main Street, the county would maintain jurisdiction over the road, so Freeport would not incur future maintenance expenses.
Existing buildings would be refurbished under the plan, along with the construction of new ones once investment dollars start flowing into the area. The proposal calls for maintaining Freeport's 80-85-foot height limit, but some rezoning would be required.
One suggestion is to replace some of the station parking lots with a parking garage. This would free up space for commercial and retail establishments, along with several small parks, creating an area that would attract workers and shoppers while accommodating commuters.
