A 9-11 Miemorial Klural by: lOO'students of Aitist/EdUcatOF Marc Josloff will be in the Freeport Memorial Library, 144 West Merrick Road finm Septetnber 1-30; -,
There will be an Artist's" Reception • Sjjtiirday, September 12,24 p.irh; with free cKbra^pn and refreshment' -" ' ;I?ollowang. the .attack- on' the twin' tovyers aitd.the Pen^gon, Mr.;Josl6ff had all of his sixth! .^'venith arid eighth-grade airt: classes emba^k'on^aifflge-scaled mural to depict the
hwrof and emotidn-filled tragedy from the initial impact and itsmassive destruction to ; emergency relief, grieving and the healing piwess of the nation;" -^ j -
.: The mural was" executed with: tiny mosaic pieces extradted from magazines, . which form a 28-foot sequential memori- \ al composition, composed mostly of general art students along with a coupleof talent classes, who alLworked collabora- • tivel^with thfeirtclassiMtes to make sure
that the imagery was contiguous and working.together as a unit.
What was most remarkable was the ethnic make up of the Flushing students, which included Hispanic, Chinese, Japanese, Middle Eastern, African American, Russian, Italian, Albanian, Muslim, Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Hindu - nearly eveiy background one could imagine. The students relied' on each other's devotion to the project in
order to see it through. Although the process was. painstaking, the students experienced a catharsis when the sections came together. The mural is breathtaking to witness in its entirety. The exhibit-includes explanatory panels about the project and a display of magazine and newspaper covers during that period of upheaval and disbelief, a looped TV interview with students and teacher, and a question-and-answer session.
