Nine students from Baldwin High School's select string ensemble performed in a concert with opera production company Evening of Enchantments on December 20 in New York City.
In the concert entitled "Do You Hear Voices," the Baldwin students played in a double string quartet while a smaller ensemble accompanied an opera singer in the aria "The Queen of the Night" from Mozart's "The Magic Flute."
Jaclyn Lieto, Alexis Redman, Chelsea Redman and Gretchen Sandberg played violin with Leiora Hughes and Michael Schroeder on viola, Ching-Wai Lo on cello, Valenne Gonzalez on clarinet, and Joanna Paez on flute. Music teacher Mary Ellen Janson accompanied the students and had the opportunity to conduct one of the opera arias.
Margarita Hughes, a Baldwin High School alumna from the Class of 1998 and co-director of the opera company," heard the Baldwin students play during the District String Festival last spring and approached Ms. Janson with this invitation.
A gala reception followed the performance, and a portion of the proceeds were donated to the Baldwin High School orchestra.
HIGH NOTES: From left are Ching-Wai Lo, Michael Schroeder, Chelsea Redman, Gretchen Sandberg, Jaclyn Lieto, Valenne Gonzalez, Joanna Paez and Alexis Redman. Missing from photo: Leiora Hughes.
