Freeport remembers the fallen
I This year's Memorial Day parade was a major event for Freeport's Mayor Andrew Hardwick. '•'
A 10-year veteran of the
United States Army, Mayor
Hardwick led the marchers
along Merrick Road accom- ;
I panied by the parade's
« grand marshal, Rev. Robert
[ Sweeney.
5 Like Mayor Hardwick,
\ Rev. Sweeney, whose
I father, Robert Sweeney,
I served as mayor of Freeport
i in the early '60s, is also a
j former military man and he
" has served as chaplain of
the New York State chapter
of the American Legion for
j the past 10 years. Mayor
\ Hardwick had the opportu-
\ nity to meet and thank two
J^ f young servicemen at the
parade.
Following close behind the officials was the Freeport School District's marching band, as well as representatives of various village organizations
including the Freeport Little League, the Historical Society, SPLASH and the Chamber of Commerce.
Fifth and sixth graders from the Atkinson School performed a medley of patriotic songs followed by the playing of "Taps" while a ceremonial wreath was laid at the Veterans' Memorial site at the Freeport Library on Merrick Road.
