it-
by Laura Schofer
Jamie Reddington of Freeport is The Leader's 2009 Mother of the Year. She is a mother,of all trades who can swing a hammer, like any carpenter; rotate a wrench with the best of plumbers and wire a house. Of course Ms. Reddington can also do the usual "Mommy" duties, including baking cookies and stringing macaroni necklaces. This is a mom whose children say she has never missed a ...concert, school play or an award ceremony .':%fBut^at's.notall, folks! Earth Day Is SPLASH Day
A hardy group of SPLASH volunteers braved a steady rain to meet with Freeport's Mayor AndrevvHardwick-last month". The .members of SPLASH were honored on Earth Day for their efforts in keeping the south shore bays and marshlands clean of trash and debris.
"I know angels when I see them," said Mayor Hardwick in presenting Rob Weltner, the president of the grassroots organization, with a proclamation declaring April 22 SPLASH Day in Freeport. SPLASH (Stop Polluting, Littering, and Save Harbors) collected
(er 31,000 pounds of trash from the waterways and bay islands last \month. The members, either on the official SPLASH boat or using their own vessels, trawled the local waters collecting debris and disposed of it at a designated collection site.
Mayor Hardwick noted the trash that was accumulating at the
"catch.basin" located at Mill Road and Main Street. "I understand
that much of this garbage floating in our waters actually comes down
from several communities north of Freeport. Thank goodness' for
e dedicated volunteers who devote their time and efforts to'col-
ng these items and keeping our waters clean," concluded :.the
