Cardoso is new fire chief
It was an historic night for Freeport's Fire Department. The village's recently elected mayor, Andrew Hardwick, a Fire Department ex-captain who officially ctU ebrated 25 years of service himself, had the honor of swearing in Chief of Department Jerry Cardoso.
It is the second, time around for Chief Cardoso,- who accepted the call to serve again due to the untimely death of First Assistant Chief Richard Layton. The April 25 ceremony was dedicated to the memory of Chief Layton, who died suddenly last January. Chief Cardoso, whose previous tenure was during 1997-1998, noted the uniqueness of the occasion in his acceptance speech. Chief Cardoso is the first Cuban-American to serve as department chief, and he was sworn into office by the first African-American mayor of Freejwrt, a brother fuefighter.;
First Assistant Chief Danny Fee,- along with Second Assistant Chief Mark Stuparich and Third Assistant Chief Dave Baer, were sworn in by Deputy Mayor Robert T. Kennedy, while Trustee William H. White Jr. presented the Fire Department's 25-years-of-service pin to Mayor Hardwick and ex-Capiain Robert Weltnen Trustee Carmen Pineyro officiated at the installation of the company officers and Trustee Jorge Martinez performed the installation of the Second Battalion delegate and the alternate delegate.
