W MAYOR SWORN I

Hundreds of residents reflecting the wide diversity of Freeport packed Village Hall on Monday to witness another historical first, the swearing in of their first African-American mayor, Andrew Hardwick.
"Thank you so much, Freeport, thank you so much," Mayor Hardwick exclaimed to the enthusiastic gathering. "This has been a heck of a day, it's just been awesome. A lot of positive things have happened."
He told the crowd of his visits earlier in the day with Governor David Paterson, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, former President Bill Clinton, and a surprise visit by. County Executive Thomas Suozzi.
"People really want to help Freeport," he continued, saying that he has been given assurances that more funds will be made available tp the village through the economic stimulus package' and other assistance.,
The mayor said that Freeport "is back on the map" and he plans to "hit the
ground running" over the next several
weeks on issues that need to be
addressed.
The meeting began with sorrte pageantry, as each trustee was introduced individually and greeted with applause as they entered the dais from the rear door.
The audience erupted into wild applause as the new mayor made his entrance, along with family members.

National Anthem, and the Rev. William Watson, the Eastern Baptist Association
moderator, offered the invocation.
Following his remarks to the gathenng,
with his wife, Cherie, holding a Bible
that belonged to his mother. Mayor Hardwick took the oath of office from Nassau County Supreme Court Judge Norman St. George.
The mayor then administered the oath to new trustees Carmen Pineyro, the first Hispanic woman elected to the board, and to Robert Kennedy, whose spouses. Dr. Walter Mendoza and Mary Kennedy,
village justice,
Stephen Drummond.
The major next appointed Mr.
Kennedy as deputy mayor and Ms. Pineyro as deputy mayor "designee."
While the mayor did not fill all the possible board and committee positions
he will have to staff at Monday's meeting, he invited residents who are interested in offering their services to contact him.
