Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray along with Senior Councilman Anthony J. . Santino, Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby /and the entire Hempstead Town Board approved the signing of a contract to acquire property in ^downtown Baldwin and transfer it to the private sector for redevelopment.
"We are excited about the future of downtown Baldwin," declared Supervisor Murray. "Baldwin's business district is becoming more vibrant each day and the proposed sale for redevelopment will help create a great retail destination."
The new agreement follows an Urban Renewal Plan adopted by the Town Board in November of 2007. The plan provides for the complete redevelopment of properties along the west side of Grand Avenue (starting slightly south of Prospect Street to Merrick Road) as well as along Merrick Road (inimediately west of Grand
Avenue)..
The town's Planning Department has selected the Engel Burman Group and Basser Kaufman to remake the face of downtown Baldwin.
"I am pleased, to join with Supervisor Murray and Councilwoman Goosby in expanding our work to provide Baldwin with meaningful and welcome upgrades," stated Councilman Santino.
"Refurbishing parking fields at the' Baldwin train station and behind the new library and adding brick-paved walkways and Victorian lighting on the east side of Grand Avenue- are among many improvements that, are already making a positive difference in the community."
As part of the revitalization process in Baldwin, the town has already enhanced the streetseape in the downtown area by adding brick-paved walkways, Victorian street lamps and newly plant-
