Freeport Schools up security; appoint HS principal
by Laraine A. Milazzo
In an effort to enhance security at Freeport High School, a new scanning system has been put in place. Teacher George Giff and Mmh Department head Jackie Matos deUvered a presentation on the system to trustees and members of the public at the August 20 meeting of the Board of Education.
The electronic scanning system was piloted'during the summer school-program and will be expanded to iiicliide^ all' high! school students when schoor begins. The photo identity cards, which- include a microchip, will be scanned upon entry to the building and are compatible with devices in the cafeteria and Ae library as well. The program is used across the nation and costs will be aided through the Suffolk County Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES).
The system provides alerts to administrators
if students are in the wrong place at the wrong time. In addition, there are "hard alerts" to let administrators know if something is very wrong such as a student under suspension, trying to enter the building. Superintendent Eric Eversley said, "We see this as a significant enhancement."
In other high school news, DT; Eversley reported that a principal had been selected for the school - Reginald Stroughn. The. School Administrators Association of New Yoiic State- recently named Mr. Stroughn Principal of the'Year."
According to a press release distributed in April, the award is given to a member of the.association "who has set the pace, character and quality of education for the children in his or her school."-Mr. Sttqughn has served as principal at Hempstead High School.
Dr. Eversley said that a candidate for the; :assistant principal position at Dodd
Middle School will be interviewed in the near future.
As part of his report, the superintendent said that two cominunity forums had been held during the summer in response to safe-' ty concerns in the community. He expects to present a report on the forums in the fall. "We look forward to more constructive dialogue," said Dr. Eversley.
School report cards
The recent report cards issued on Long Island schools "documents our continuing improvement trend," said Dr. Eversley. However, the supointendent added that the reports on the graduation rate are conq)lex and confusing.
'Raymond McCloat, interim assistant superintendent for curriculum, echoed the sentiments that there have been "significant improvements." Similarly, he said the 57% graduation rate did not include the August
graduates. That figure raises graduation rates to 62%.
Dr. McCloat noted that the district has ° a high percentage of transient population and that can skew the dropout rate. Many students leave the district without reporting their movements,- leading the state to assume that they are dropouts.
Enq)hasis on a four-year graduation is not fair, continued the assistant superintendent. Many of Freeport's studentsclaim English as their second language and may need more time to prepare for the mandatory testing..
If that means they need a longer time frame to graduate, "rd rather get them out with usable skills," said Dr. McCloat. He predicted that the programs and interventions that have been put in place will result in "marked improvements" in upcoming years.
