Red tide in Baldwin Bay
by Douglas Finlay
Baldwin Bay is ihundated with the red tide, a harmless algae bloom different from the brown tide that has plagued the" Great Soiith Bay for the last two months.
On its regular outing to test Hempstead Bay waters last Thursday afteriioon a Stop Polluting, Littering And Save Harbors (SPLASH) boat found water in the bay a murkey brown, took samples and notified Town of Hempstead bay constables along with the state Department of Conservation (DEC), both of who tested the water on Friday at several depths.
"Both agencies have identified the substance causing the discoloration," remarked Bob Weltner,
president of the Freeport-based environmental grassroots organization SPLASH.
Mr. Weltner said the Town of Heihsptead told him late Friday the discoloration is in fact the red tide.
Town of Hemsptead spokesperson Susie Trenkle confirmed to The Leader that zoe plankton are in the water. 'They are reddish plankton that can sting people who are in the water."
She said any sting would be treated like a jellyfish sting.
She added that red tide doesn't stay for long, and doesn't do damage like brown tide does, such as creating hypojda, a condition in which water is robbed of oxygen, leaving little for . aquatic life to flourish.
Meanwhile, .Nassau County
Department of Health spokesperson Cynthia Brown said the county has no permitted beaches in the Baldwin Bay area where swimming occurs, but urges people to stay out of the water in tfiat bay.
Jim Gilihbre, director of mariiie resources" for tiie New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, told The Leader that thoe are variations of the red tide. "Toe plankton are in the sediment (as cysts), and emeige fix)m the sediment as the water warms. But when the water becomes too warm they then in-cyst, or go back into the sediment," he continued.
He added that triggers that set off the red bloom include water temperature, nutrients in the water from storm water runoff, for example, and oxygen levels in the water.
"Each of these can increase the m.ij;-nitude of the bloom."
Mr. Weltner believes storm water runoff is food and fuel for the alg.ic "The streets are clean after a rain," In.' said, but the bays are full of nutrivnt ahid other contaminants.
"Add fertilizer to warm water and see what happens," he said.
Mr. Gilmore then explained a niore virluent form of red tide - which is not in Baldwin Bay - called paralytic shellfish poisoning. "This is the more dangerous red tide, because it can kill fish and poison shellfish." He said shellfish, such as clams, don't die, but people who eat the contaminated shellfish can become very sick due to neurotoxins in the shellfish.
