Freeport Police Chief Michael Woodward told The Leader the three men were assaulted with knives and machetes by a group of seven individuals in the rear of 16 West Mernck Road the evening of May 29.
"The victims sought refuge in the deli," said Chief Woodward, "but were ordered to leave and the door locked behind-them. A bystander called police, who adrainistered'aid and all three victims were transported to area hospitals.
"On the following evening. May 30, members of the Freeport Police Department community response vinit performed a license premise check in conjunction with the Freeport BuUding Department," said Chief Woodward. ',- .^ - ^.
'The premises were found in violation of numerous local code violations including electric, plumbing and unsanitary code violations, <ln addition the premise failed to-produce a-vaMd public assembly license." . Chief Woodward' said two illegal gambling machines were observed and seized.
TTie seven perpetrators remain at large. "We request that anyone^witii -information iegaiding this assapU contact the police. All calls will remain confidential." Chief Woodward added that the assault may possibly be gang-related and'"due to the nuihlser of incUviduak involved, they Will fece gang assault charges." See page 6 for more.
Flags for the fallen!
TO HONOR THOSE WHO HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIVES IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN Funeral Directors Michael J. Cecere III and Phil Halpin of the Cecere-Pensa Funeral Home at 2293 Grand Ave., Baldwin, organized a tribute to the fallen warriors of The Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Flags were purchased and volunteers gathered to place the flags on the front lawn of the funeral home in preparation of the Memorial Day Parade. Over four thousand American flags" were proudly displayed to remember the soldiers. The American flag display is at left. Along with the volunteers, from left, are Phil Halpin, V.F.W.
