A 14-year-61d boy set fire to a toilet paper dispenser in the second floor boys' bathroom at Dodd Middle School on April. 14, police reported.
John O'Mard, principal of Dodd Middle School, wrote to parents on Apiil 15 informing them of the incident. "At approximately 12:10 p.m. we received a report that there was smoke inside the boys' bathroom. The entire building was evacuated and the fire department was called and responded," he wrote. - -InitiaJly-.students were evacuated to the playground, then taken to the gymnasium, for the remainder of the school day, wrote Mr. O'Mard. "They were safe and supervised the entire time."
The Nassau police Arson/Bomb Squad said a school custodian extinguished the fire. There', were no injuries, but the fire damaged the wall and ceiling in the second-floor bathroom.
The boy was arrested at school. He was charged with Arson and released to his mother on an appearance ticket, returnable to Family Court on lYiesday, April 29.
In his letter to parents. Principal O'Mard described the occurrence as "a very unfortunate incident."
"Arson is no joke, no matter the age of the person," wrote Michael Raab, former Freeport * school board trustee, in a letter to the editor (see page 9). "Parents, please have a very important and serious talk with your kids. Setting fires puts many people at risk, not to mention the criminal charges involved. This time we were lucky..."
• Mr. O.'Mard also addressed the seriousness of this issue in his letter: "I would like to reassure you that safety is our fust priority at all times.-. Please discuss with your child the importance of safety and reporting anything unusual or suspicious."
Freeport school officials also stressed that the safety of students was a top priority. A prepared Statement issued by Freeport Schools said, "We ae fiiUy cooperating with the investigation into an incident that occurred on April 14 at Dodd Middle School." Officials added that "we will continue to work with authorities during this investigation."
