for libraries

An informal survey conducted by The Freeport-Baldwin Leader found that 76 percent of the- respondents oppose the consolidation of libraries.
In November, The Leaider ran an article about County Executive Thomas Suozzi's proposal to consolidate the 54 individual Nassau County libraries, each with its own board of trustees and local identity, into a.county wide library system.
The debate is on the back burner after Mr. Suozzi met with library directors in December. However, some form of consolidation within the library system may still be pursued.-;.
-': A study is now underway to create a blueprint that will help reduce the size of government, thus reducing some of the tax burden now facing residents..
There were 90 responses to the survey from people in Baldwin, Freeport, Merrick and North Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh and Seaford. Libraries mentioned by respondents

In honor of National Library Week, the Baldwin Public Library Board of Trustees and staiff invite you to the Eighth Annual Baldwin Public Library Day on Sunday, April 13, from 1-5 p.ih. for an open-house celebration and activities.
This year's celebration will honor retiring board President Kevin B. Kamen, Library Board member since .1978. Mr. Kamen has been elected to. six five-year terms on the board, serving as its president for 14 years. His spirit of volunteerism in the Baldwin community is exemplary.
A special recognition ceremony will be held at 1:15 p.m. in the Community Room to thank him for his dedicated service to the library and community.
The day will continue with programs for adults, teens and children, and include tours, raffles, giveaways that refreshments. Children, will be treated to a special program, "Friends Like You and Me" with Lyle Cogan, as well as a visit from Corduroy Bear and face painting.
Teens vyill enjoy caricaturist Alison Gelbman and a presentation by Chaos Inc., the Baldwin High School Robotics teairi. Adults will be entertained by the Day Trippers, a.Beatles tribute band. Musical selections will also be provided by'Baldwin schoolchildren.
