Hearing on Roosevelt toxic site March 5
A public meeting will be held on Wednesday, March's, from 7-9 p:m. to present the recommended a cleanup plan for off-site contamination from the Jimmy's Dry Cleaners inactive hazardous waste site just blocks from Atkinson School in Freeport.
The meeting will be held at the Roosevelt Library, 27 .West Fulton Avenue, Roosevelt.
At the meeting, the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the New York state Department of Health (DOH), will review the history of the site, describe the results of investigations completed to date and the rationale behind the recommendations for remediation.
The cleanup plan is based.on an evaluation of alternatives considered in a feasibility study conducted under DEC's oversight.
The Jimmy's Dry Cleaners site, at'61 Nassau Road, Roosevelt, is approximately one acre in size and includes a commercial building which formerly housed Jimiriy's Dry Cleaners. The building is not occupied and is in disrepair.
Investigations to date indicate that groundwater and soil vapor at the site have been contaminated with PCE (a dry cleaning solvent) related to past disposal practices at the site. Groundwater and soil vapor contamination have also been identified off-site.
To better facilitate the remediation of the contaminants, the site was separated into two operable units: Operable Unit 1 (OUl) refers to the Jimmy's Dry Cleaner property and the neighboring lots, the off-site contamination has been designated Operational Unit (0U2).
