MRSA found Baldwin
in Freeport and Roosevelt High Schools; High School also reported infection
by Laura Schofer
TTie Nassau County Department of Health has announced a confinsKl case of Methicillin-iesistani staphj'lococcus aureus (MRSA) in a student at Roosevelt High School, following prior cases reported at Baldwin and Fieeprat Kgh Schools.
The Roosevelt High School student was diagnosed on October 24. The student was not hospitalized, but is receiving treatment and is recovering, acccsxiing to the Department of Health.
A case of MRSA was confirmed at Freeport High School on Monday. October 22, and a case of MRSA was also confirmed at Baldwin Hi^ School on October 21. Hiat student was diagnosed on September 21. None of the smdents was hospitalized. The smdents from
Baldwin and Freeport High Schools have recovered.
MRSA refers to a type of bacteria (St^hylococcus aureus) that is resistant to conuQonly prescribed antibiotics, but can be treated by others. Most cases of MRSA are preventable and easily treated. Severe infections may require hospitalization and treatment with stronger antibiotics.
Staphylococcal bacteria, including MRSA, can cause skin infections that may look like a pimple or boU and can be red, swollen, painful or have pus or other drainage. More serious infections may cause pneumonia, bloodstream infections or surgical wound infections. Individuals who have skin infections tliat do not heal rapidly or develop into a boil or abscess with swelling, pus. pain or fever should see their health care
provider.
Due to heightened awareness of MRSA, schools are receiving increased reports of students in their population who have been diagnosed with MRSA and are notifying the Department of Health.
E>r. Eric Eversley, superintendent of Freeport Schools, sent a letter to parents on October 24 stating that, "Our district's proactive efforts regarding this emerging health issue include informational posters from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in every school; health guides distributed to all coaches and athletes; and information posted on our website in English and Spanish. -\nd. of course, we have continued to clean and disinfect shared equipment, such as athletic equipment, mats, locker rooms, etc."
"It was just a matter of time before the
problem of MRSA reached our schools." said Hene C^orina. president of PULSE NY (Persons Unite*.! Limiting Substundards and EiTors in Healthcare) who, with a local youth group anci communuy members, developed an age-appropriate pio-giam^for schools on Long Island.
'The best way to prevent MRS.^ and other infections is to practice good hygiene,'" .said Dr. Abby Grcenberg, acting health commissioner for the Nassau County Department of Health. "'Wash your hands thoroughly witij soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sani-tizer; immediately wa.sh any cut or break in the skiif with soap and water and apply a clean bandage daily; avoid contact with otiier people's wound or bandages; and a\oid sharing personal items such as towels or razors."
