I was among the first to go on a guided kayaking tour at Norman J Lev\ Park and Preserve. I got into a double kayak with my sister, Carolina Toscano. Carolina had never kayaked, but she had canoed before. I had kayaked about 5 years ago. but that was all the experience I had.
When we first got into the water we were nervous. But, after a few minutes it was really easy to steer, and vife learned how to slow down and speed up. While we were having tons of fun (even splashing each other a little), we were actually
learning about our surroundings.
There are over 170 species of birds at Norman J Levy Park and Preserve. We kayaked right near some of them. We even saw an osprey perch.
The other seven tnembers of the tour and I kayaked down the Meadow Brook. It was beautiful. We then kayaked into the Merrick Bay. From the Merrick Bay, on a clear day, you can see the Jones Beach Theater, the lighthouse at Fire Island and Robert Moses Causeway.
While looking out at all of these views, we kayaked around the bay, and under the 500 foot pier at Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve.
It was a lot of fun.'
If you want to take a tour, too, you must make a reservation with the staff at Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve just east of the Meadowbrook Parkway off Merrick Road by calling 804-2000.
The tours are firee, but if you don't have a kayak, you can rent one at the ranger's office. It is $20 for a single kayak, and $30 for a double kayak. The tour is 2 miles and takes 1-1/2 hours. Have fun! (For information regarding this and other teen-friendly events, visit by teens 4 teens on The Leader website www.freeport-baldwinleader.com.)
