PSC approves Freeport Electric rate increase
By Joan Delaney
The Baldwin Board of Education signed an agreement between the district and Dr Thomas Caramore to sen^e as interim superintendent from June 30, 2007 until July 1, 2008, on Friday, June 15, two days after the June 13, public school board meeting.
Dn Caramore had been serving as acting superintendent since May 25 and was being paid S1.000 per day. His appointment was announced at a surprise board meeting on May 22, when former Superintendent Dr. Robert Britto's resignation was also announced. That aereement allowed
Dr. Britto to use his 23 accumulated, unused vacation days starting May 30, with an official resignation effective as of June 30.
According to the agreement with Dr. Caramore, the contract is "subject to and contingent upon the issuance of a 'waiver' by the New York State Commissioner of Education permitting the employment of the interim superintendent who is a retiree under the New York State Teachers' Retirement S\-stem."

The state Public Service Commission (PSC) voted on June 20 to establish new rates, terms and conditions effective June 30, 2007, for customers of the Freeport Electric Department.
According to a press release issued by the PSC, the typical residential customers using 500 kilowatt hours (KWh) per month, taking into account the rate modifier credit, will see an increase in bills of approximately 56.58 or about 10.63 percent per month during the summer and an increase of approximately $6.22 or about 10.50 percent per month during winter months.
These rates, terms and conditions were contained in a Joint Proposal by Freeport Electric, the Incorporated
Village of Freeport (village), and staff of the Public Service Commission. The Joint Proposal provides for changes to base revenues and Freeport's rate modifier, as well as addressing operational and accounting matters.
"The Joint Proposal is the product of negotiation and mediation," said commission Chairwoman Patricia L. Acampora. "Although the Joint Proposal contains a rate increase, the commission is satisfied that the thorough review of the Freeport filing by staff, the filing of staff testimony, and the hard work by both parties to identify and resolve disagreements and differing interpretations of the company's accounting obligations has produced a fair result for Freeport's
ratepavers." , .• ..
