One in three girls and one in four boys has been sexually abused by age 18, according to the FBI. And of those abused, only one to 10 percent ever report the abuse.
Did you know that most pedophiles comtnit an average of 117 sexual crimes during their lifetimes and may victimize 50 girls before being caught and convicted, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Molesters of boys commit an average of 250 sexual crimes during their lifetime and may victimize 150 boys before being caught and convicted.
These figures were just a few of the sobering facts provided to residents at a communitN' forum sponsored by the Freeport Police Department on Wednesday, January 10. at the Freeport Recreation Center.
The forum was an invitation to the community to learn about what they can do about the presence of sexual predators in Freeport. Residents also questioned police authorities about the rumor that Freeport has a cluster of predators.
Freeport Police Officer Cindy
Cummings opened the discussion about sexual offenders with an overview of what the law pennits the police 10 do if a registered sex offender lives in Freeport.
"We look at their risk level and their designation and make sure that they are living within the residential restrictions." she said. The police department also notifies the school district about the offender.
These provisions are the result of the passage of Megan's Law in 1996 also known as the Sex Offender Registration Act.
Sexual predators are assigned a risk level, based on the crime they have committed and upon the risk of repeating their offense. In New York State sex offenders are assigned a risk level using a Risk .Assessment Instrument.
A guide written by Parents for Megan's Law says that "Risk level recommendations are made to the sentencing court. Factors being evaluated include the offender's current offense, criminal history, post-offense behavior and planned release environment. The risk assessment instrument assigns numerical values to each risk factor, for example 20 points if there were (continued on page 3)
