Should the town or coimtN-oversee our parks and pre-ser\es?
That question has been on the minds of some local emd-ronnientalists and park advocates since hearing about the recent transfer of nine pocket parks in the Town of North Hempstead.
•'Now there is talk about tbe possible transfer of twopre-sen'es - the Massapequa Preserve and the Stiilwell Preser%e [in Syosset] to tbe Town of Oyster Bay." said Richard Schar}'. North Bellmore environmentalist and president of the Friends for the Massapequa Preserve.
The Massapequa Presen'e is 400 acres of land that reaches from Bethpage Park in the north dowTi to Merrick Road in Massapequa.
David Ring, a spokesperson for the Nassau Count>' Parks Department, confirmed there "is a proposal for the possible
.<?t^ "f?E.r
transfer of the Massapequa Preser%"e, Cantiague Park and ScQlweU Preserve as well as several other passive parks to the Town of Ov'ster Bay." Mr. Ring added that "the transfer would need approval Jtom the Nassau County Legislature."
No su^ottfor a transfer
But Republican Le^siator Norma Gonsalves told The Le»kf sbe wmdd not support any such jsoposal to transfer our preserves, and Demociatic Legislator David Denenberg added tbat "preserves are not like parks. Preserves and open space are what we [the county] does best"
Yet, Nassau County Comptroller Howard
Weitzman told residents at the May 14 North BeUmore Ciwc Association that the transfer of some paridands is a way to help consolidate government services and save taxpayers money.
"TTiis is not about the consolidation of services," said
Legislator! Gonsalves. "It's j about abandoning our responsibility to maintain what | we've paid for,"
"The county j spends virtually nothing on these preserves," said Richard Schary. "So | how do you save tajcpayers money?"
Mr. Ring of flie | coimty parks I
<fepaiQnent said that j costs for the preserves are "Indirect
We don't have any
dedicated employees as we do at Wantagh Park, for exan^)le. But we cut the grass and trim the trees. We do general maintenance."
Mr. Scharv' said. "The county spent about $2,000 to $3,000 on the Massapequa Preserve in 2006. TTiis is virtually nothing and it's the Friends of the Preserve that do most of the maintenance."
