The Baldwin Board of Education met on Wednesday, March 9, to propose the budget for the 2007/2008 school year.
Following the resolution of prior business, Boaid President Mary Jo O'Hagan turned the meeting over to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert J. Britto. Dr. Britto extended his thanks to all for the collaborative effort with special thanks to Assistant Superintendent for Business and Administration Services Frank Fiumano and his team for their expertise, diligence and commitment.
Dr. Britto also commended all administrators whose responsibility is not only to the educational needs of the students and their teachers, but to the taxpayers in the community. Dr. Britto described the budget as well as subsequent future budgets as being not only physical!)' predictable but stable and sustainable. Some of the needs identified within the budget that will be addressed and met within the multi-year plan are:
• Replacement of equipment, supplies and classroom furniture.
• Continued maintenance of the infrastructure of the schools.
• Comply with new state requirements to contract with the services of; an internal auditor.
• Hire an outside firm to account for^ all district assets whose evaluation is included in the annual audit.
• Respond to market conditions that result in increases in insurance premiums, retirement contributions, natural gas costs, etc.
• Provide development for teachers, principals and others in the area of mathematics and literacy.
• Complete the purchase of mathematics programs for grades 3-5, a reading library for grades K-2, the purchase of integrated algebra textbooks and graphing calculators.
Dr. Britto then turned the meeting over to Assistant Superintendent for Business and Administrative Services Frank Fiumano, who presented the Administrative and Capital portion of the proposed budget in a Power Point (continued on page 7)
Grandparents Day
Beaming grandparents and "special persons" were honored guests recently at New Visions Elementary School in Freeport. However, the decorative hearts and paper flowers bestowed on them didn't disguise the event's deeper purpose: student achievement.
Research consistently shows that parent and family involvement is a major contributor to children's success
in school.
"There were a lot of lessons learned," says Principal Renee Crump. "Events like this help build a bridge between home and school, and children were excited about such projects as interviewing grandparents about their lives and writing reports that were shared with their classes."
