Milburn celebrates Founders Day
with love
MILBURN SCHOOL CELEBRATED PTA Founders Day with a musical performance by its youngest students singing Beatles' classics recently. Kindergarten students from Jennifer Kreusch's class sang "Love Me Do," while kindergartners from Jessica Piccarillo's class sang "All You Need is Love," using sign language along with their voices. Wearing handmade, heart-shaped headbands in keeping with the Valentine holiday, the students charmed the audience with their performances.
Cleaning up
brownfields m Freeport
by Laura Schofer
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has proposed a program to clean up two con-laminated sites in Freeport - the Nassau Uniform Ser\ice, located at 525 Ray Street and the former Metal Etching Company at 435 South Main Street. The Metal Etching Corporation buildings were demolished by 2001 and a boat dealership, marina and boat storage yard are now located on the 1.05-acre site.
The Nassau Uniform Service, a uniform supply company, is bordered on the west by a man-made saltwater canal off of Milbum Creek. It is still in business. The owner is Da\id Cinn.
At one time, a dry cleaning operation took place at the site, and the uniforms were cleaned using tetrachloroethene <PCE),themost'OCHinmonisolvent used
for dry cleaning. However, the dry cleaning operation was discontinued.
Contamination of soil and groundwa-, ter occurred after an indoor 2,000 gallon waste oil/PCE tank leaked. It was removed on April 27,1990.
.According to the DEC on-site groundwater, soil and soil vapor are contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, the DEC added that health risk is nominal because of limited exposure to these elements to the public.
The DEC has proposed a plan to clean up the site that includes the excavation of impacted soils in the vicinity of the oil/water separator, modification and operation of an existing soil vapor extraction system (SVES) that treats soil and soil vapor contamination as well as modification of an existing groundwater <eKtraeMon and toeatment systens (GETS^ >
to treat contaminated on-site groundwater. The owner has begun interim remedial measiues (IRM), including those listed above to address the issue.
The total cost to construct and implement the remedy is estimated to be $523,800, according to the DEC fact sheet. "The site owner has funded
the site investigations and IRMs. A new consent order will be negotiated wift the property owner for the subsequent design and implementation of the site remedy by the owner's consultants and contractors under NYSDEG oversight," the sheet stated, Mr. Ciiin did not return calls for cpnjmeht.
