Freeport's New Visions School of Exploration and Discovery has been named a 2006 No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education in recognition of its high student performance and engaging curriculum.
New Visions, which was the Freeport School District's - and Long Island's -first magnet school of choice when it opened in 1995, is among only 14
schools statewide and three on Long Island to be so honored. New Visions initially opened in leased space, and in 2003 moved into a brand new, state-of-the-art school building.
"This is an exciting and well deserved recognition for New Visions School, and I congratulate the staff, students and parents," said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Eric L. Eversley. "Given the strong upward momentum of student performance in all eight of our schools, I expect that others will soon follow the pathway New Visions has paved." A blue rib bon banner; will be:
unveiled at the school during a celebration on Thursday, November 2.

"We pray in gratitude for the life of our hero Julian." - Father Robert Coyle, Chaplain, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy
The full solemnity of both church and state brought comfort at the funeral of Marine Sgt. Julian Arechaga, 23, who died in Al Anbar province in Iraq on October 9, while conducting combat operations.
Marines lined the street outside of Our Holy Redeemer Church in Freeport while the sad strains of bagpipes from the Nassau County Pipe and Drum Corps filled the windy autumn skies.
Scores of motorcyclists from the Patriot Guard Riders held American flags and snapped to salute as the funeral cortege moved . down; Ocean. Avenue to the;church.;Al6ng the curb,; members of ! the' "Freeport ? Fire; Department,; the American Legion,;res-' idents, and forniefmem'bers.of the milr-
itary, some of whom served in Korea and Vietnam, stood solemnly.
Inside the church, Sgt. Julian Arechaga's wife Felecia, father Julian, sister Sheyla, and brother-in-law Russ Randazzo, and scores of family and friends were met by a panoply of clergy to leJad the casket, which was covered in a white liturgical cloth embroidered with a cross to symbolize both death and resurrection. The rich organ music of the spiritual, "Amazing Grace," filled the church.
The liturgy of the Mass of the Resurrection emphasized the life which awaits the Marine hero. But in homily reflections. Father Coyle acknowledged the present pain and loss. "'We need to mourn; we need'to bring our tears to God," he said as he comforted the family for a loss that "is a mystery; there is no good answer for ' what has happened."- • •'•;'• •" -He, praised theyoun'g; Marine, "who •answered the call," knci' expressed the gratitude of '.'tKe^^eOpje of Long Island, •; -. ; • - • • 1 •.' • (contin'ue.d pnjpqge 6)
