The Community Newspaper
Thursday, September 21^ ^06
Friday, September 8, was a historic day for youth of Long Island, as scores of youth successfully participated in Long Island's first Emergency Preparedness Youth Day sponsored by Eager To Serve, Inc. (ETS) in Freeport.
ETS' executive director, 'Levada Felder, called the event a tremendous success, "Our children persuade their parents to go to McDonald's time and time again. Surely, they can be taught to be a voice during the time of disaster. They can influence their parents not to drive through floodwaters or to turn off the electricity before evacuating their home due to a disaster."
Emergency planner Dyan E. Greggs coordinated the event, which was designed to honor the memory of the children who lost their lives during Hurricane Katrina. Ms. Greggs, a native of Freeport, spent
three months in Biloxi, Mississippi, as Shelter Operations Manager for seven of the American Red Cross' Emergency Shelters and later became Feeding Operations Manager. "When we teach the children how to respond in emergency situations they can truly be a great help to the parents and to their communities. Our children are worth the investment," Ms. Greggs said.
From the smallest tot to the teenager wanting to sound the police car's siren, youth sat on the edges of their seats as they gleaned information from Officer Steven Rampanelli of the Freeport Police Department, Erin Perillo of the Long Island Regional Poison and' Drug Information Center and the American Red Cross in Mineola. In addition, the children were extremely excited to get a close up look into the American Red Cross Emergency Response

Throughout the day, age-appropriate disaster preparedness, fire prevention, crime prevention and poison control classes were provided oh a rotating basis, door prizes were given and hands of curious children were continuously raised to get their questions answered.
Each child received READY Certificates from ETS, as a special symbol that our children can," and will be ready, too.
