It's curtains for the LIRR!
THE WATERTOWER before the curtain fell.

The painting curtain surrounding the Freeport watertowei- was being taken down because of the high wind conditions on Monday evening at 6 p.m.
It broke loose and hit the high power lines and then fell onto the LIRR track, stopping east and westbound commuter trains until 3 a.m. One eastbound train was stopped approximately 200 feet west of the tarp.
A pedestrian at the scene stated that "sparks were flying all over the place when the tarp hit the wires" and "two men were on the tower when it happened, but got down safely."
Police and fire departments arrived shortly after this reporter was on the scene to reroute traffic and safely evacuate the stalled trains. LIPA was then called to determine if the power needed to be shut off on the high power lines.

The Windworks Coalition of state, national and international organizations in favor of a wind park off Long Island's Jones Beach has wasted little time in developing strategies it believes will be necessary to blunt the burly chill of those opposed to the wind park.
Meeting last Thursday, August 10, at The Office of Citizens Campaign for the Environment in Farmingdale, representatives from several coalition members hammered out ways it believes it can help dispel myths while offering facts about the wind park, help people decide which politicians side with them on the issues; and draft a letter to the U.S. Mineral Management Service suggesting the core issues that
should be addressed concerning the wind park.
"It was a tremendous success," said Adrienne Esposito, executive director. Citizens Campaign for the Environment. "We support the wind park for many reasons, including the issue of national security, public health, the environment and global climate change, and we want to make the right choices about cleaner energy as we enter into the new millennium." "We had a very productive meeting," agreed Gordian Raacke, executive director of Renewable Energy of Long Island (RELI). He claimed that two new members joined during the meeting: The League of Conservation Voters and the Grassroots Environmental Education group, adding to the more than 20 groups now on board.
Neil Lewis, executive director of the Neighborhood Network, said the meeting was an indication that the coalition is indeed growing in number and intensity.
Laying out a strategy
The purpose of the meeting was to lay out a strategy for members to reach into the community and distribute materials, and what those materials should contain.
A FAQ sheet was developed; a Myths and Facts sheet was devised, all on printable sheets and brochures explaining, for example, the pollution a wind park would avoid.
Ms. Esposito said additional material will be created that "compare fossil fuels verses the environmental and health benefits of wind power. We will do an analysis. Fossil fuels are degrading our environment."
