In what was the first of a series of forums around New York State, an Assembly Republican Task Force met with local law enforcement and school . officials at the Merrick Library to discuss crime in our communities and the steps that can be taken to reduce the incidence of crime.
Led by Assemblyman David R. Townsend, Jr. (Kirkland) and co-chairman David G. McDonough (Merrick), the forum included Republican assemblymen from across Long Island. Invited guests included members of the staff of Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice, as well as Andrew M. Mulrain, detective lieutenant and commanding officer of the Gang Investigation Squad and representatives from the Merrick and Freeport school districts.
Mr. McDonough said in a press release, "Our speakers today shared their experiences with great programs that have helped to make Nassau County a safer place." It is hoped that after listening to community
members throughout the state, a legislativt package can be developed to enhance law enforcement and develop crime prevention programs," said Mr. Townsend. "Tough penalties for DWI offenses and gang activity are essential," said Assemblyman Tom McKevitt (East Meadow), who hoped the meeting in Merrick would be a good start to the success of the task force objectives.
Just this year the state Assembly passed tougher DWI laws, including Boating While Intoxicated (BWI) provisions "What else do you need?" asked Mr McDonough of Pamela Kelly-Pincus, the deputy bureau chief of the Nassau County district attorney's office.
Ms. Pincus said that with approximately one-third of the 4,100 DWI cases being recidivists, a specialized DA and judge were established to ensure that offenders were "prosecuted within the confines of one courtroom."
What is needed now is a law to expand the list of those who can authorize the drawing of blood for the purpose of prosecution, she said.
