At the June 21 meeting of the Freeport Board of Education Superintendent Eric Eversley said it was "a happy time and a sad time" as he bid a fond farewell to the district retirees. Dr. Mary Bediako, assistant superintendent for Personnel, said that the retirees' years of service represented in excess of 500 years.
Cafeteria staff retirees were Margaret Bertram and Barbara Yodice. The custodial staff is losing Mercedes Valdes. The retirees from Columbus Avenue School were Rowena Grady and Ellen Stark.
Those retiring from Archer Street School were Doris Dawley, Georgette Michon and Ellen O'Connor. Noreen Larson is retiring from Leo F. Giblyn School. Also retiring from Giblyn is Principal Harris Chandler. Among the retirees from Bayview Avenue School were Mary Louise Anglim, Alice Kelly, Joyce Marged, Elizabeth McGeough and \yun Siu Ng.
The J.W. Dodd Middle School retirees were Lynda Aron, Peggy Gluck, Harold Kirschbaum and Tommy Lee.
Freeport High School's retirees were Alan Andersen, Peter Bruzzo, Sandy Burns, Judith Kearney, Mabel Meisinger, Shirley Parker, Joseph Powers, Richard Restivo, Blanca Sardinha, Robert Wolchok and Clejetter Worrells.
Attending her last board meeting as a trustee of the board was Sunday Coward. "I'm a product of this community and I'm glad to give back," she said.
Attendees at the meeting were treated to performances by Archer Street School third-graders on their recorders, the third-grade orchestra and the fourth-grade band and chorus. Eight students from Dodd Middle School and Freeport High School read their award-winning poetry at the meeting. Six had attended a workshop at Adelphi University, and two will be published in an anthology of children's writing.
