What do the mayor of Freeport, a dancer, a dentist, a horticulturist and a martial arts instructor all have in common? Archer Street Career Day, of course! Two dozen professionals in a variety of career fields—many of whom are Freeport residents—visited Archer Street School to talk to students about what they do, and to encourage them to explore their interests and think about their future careers.
The "Carnival of Careers" was a natural outgrowth of the work Archer students do every day. One of Freeport's magnet schools, "Archerville" (as it is nicknamed) is a micro-society school with its own community, consisting of functional "businesses" that mirror those of the real world. All classes have enterprises that connect with both the school's theme and the state standards, and it all ties in to Career Day.
"I like being a judge because I get to help people," state Court of Claims Judge Marcia Hirsch told students. She explained that her job was much more involved than simply sending people to jail. "People who have drug problems, for example, can get treatment," her honor said. "We can get them education and job training."
Police Officer Chris Wilson had to do all the talking for both himself and his partner. Rocky. Officer Wilson and Rocky are part of the FPD's K-9 unit, and Rocky is a German shepherd. "When I got him he was a tiny baby," Officer Wilson remi-

fey nisced about his partner. "When he was old enough, we sent him to school for five months to learn how to be a police dog."
Mindy Peretz talked about her work as a marketing representative for Nickelodeon, a network the students know well. She explained that her job required a lot of studying on her part. "I had to go to elementary school, middle school, high school and college," Ms. Peretz informed the children. "I took a lot of writing classes," she added, "and a lot of math."
Freeport Mayor William Glacken asked students to describe his job. He also quizzed the youngsters on various aspects of civic duties, including how a person becomes mayor and how the voting process works.
Cardiac nurse Robert Rosignolo discussed the circulatory system using a model of the human heart, and explained why he wears the uniform he does.
"It's important for children to see where authentic learning can take them," says Principal Paula Lein. "These people have gone through school, have achieved, and have become successful," Ms. Lein explains. "We encourage students to ask a lot of questions, so they can find out firsthand what it's all about." According to the principal, the most important piece of Career Day is student achievement. "We never lose sight of our prize," she says,"the academic, emotional and social success of our students."
ROBERT ROSIGNOLO shares some of his expertise as a cardiac nurse.
