A motion to adopt the proposed 2006 - 2007 budget for Freeport schools was unanimously
' approved by board members at a meeting on
' April 5.
! After numerous discussions and examination of
' expenditures, Deputy Superintendent of Schools
i Kishore Kuncham unveiled a proposal of S 128,509,876 for the upcoming school year. Of
! great impact on the budget was the timely
, announcement that state aid to the district would
^ be increased by $2.6 million.
; The additional state aid, along with the continual tweaking of the budget, has resulted in an increase of 6.26% (as opposed to the 6.97%
' originally proposed in February of this year).
The tax levy increase of 2.20% represents "the
lowest tax levy percentage in many years," said
' Superintendent Eric L. Eversley. Some of those
funds have been used to restore items such asj-capital projects, the new science program and >\' funding for extended day and Saturday acade- ' mies, which were eliminated earlier this year.
The remaining $2,250,000 will be used to \;l reduce the tax levy. On the average home ^ ; ($293,600) taxes will increase by approximately > ! $116 annually, but Dr. Kuncham warned that-'; countywide reassessment "will continue to have v 5 an impact." ['\
Should the budget fail and a contingency budg-; > et be put into place, some of the items that may ; >i suffer might be field trips .and athletics, summer ;'.! programs, and perhaps transportation in the form v.j of late buses. Money for supplies and equipment' | could also be affected according to Dr. Kuncham.! ^ There will be a public hearing on the budget on S, 1 May 3 and_ the budget vote is scheduled for! ,; Tuesday, May 16 in districts across Long Island. ^!
