In 2004, a group of Freeport High School students who are members of the Operation Pride VIP program have come up with the idea of a Freeport "Increase the Peace Campaign." The purpose of the campaign is to celebrate and promote a peaceful lifestyle.
The campaign, which was successfully held in 2005, will take place this year during the weeks of April 2 to 15. It will focus on activities villagewide and in Freeport High School. Freeport Pride will sponsor this effort in collaboration with many other Freeport groups who are being enlisted to participate as campaign partners. Plans for the campaign include:
Kickoff and Rally - On the afternoon of March 22, we intend to hold an Increase the Peace Kick Off and Rally that will include speakers, presentations, and entertainment. It is scheduled to be held at the Zion Cathedral Church of God in Christ in Freeport, tentatively at 3 p.m.
Orange. Ribbon Campaign I - The campaign entails orange ribbons being distributed throughout the village with homeowners being asked to display the ribbon at their homes, primarily by wrapping it around a tree in front of their
homes to demonstrate their support of. nonviolence. We hope that as Freeporters travel throughout the village they will be moved by the sea of orange ribbons and the sentiment they represented.
The primary means of distribution will be sending ribbons home with Freeport Schools' students tentatively scheduled for on Thursday or Friday, March 30 or 31. This would enlist the involvement of virtually all Freeport youth.
The Freeport Library, the Freepoit Recreation Center, the Freeport Police Department, Freeport churches, local businesses and other community institutions are being asked to also serve as distribution points. With each ribbon will come instructions explaining the campaign, its time span (two weeks) and a request that the ribbons be removed after the two weeks.
Orange Ribbon Campaign II - Smaller ribbons will also be distributed for individuals to wear during the campaign. These ribbons would be distributed primarily to adults (i.e. teachers, store employees, etc.). The smaller ribbons would be an expression of the Freeport adult community that we care about Freeport youth and encourage them to
practice nonviolence.
