JORDAY KIMBERLY EVANS was born on January 16, 2006.
by Eileen Dever
The first Freeport baby of 2006 entered the world on January 16 to cheers, wows, oh's and ah's, from an unexpectedly large audience of Freeport village police, firefighters EMS workers, family, and neighbors who all did a part in the deliver of this impetuous little girl.
Little Jorday Kimberly Evans was not waiting one more day to be named Freeport's first baby of 2006. The little beauty arrived two days early, weighing 8 pounds, 4 ounces, and 20 inches long and before her mom could get
to the hospital.
Mom and dad, Sonya and Gregory Evans of Freeport, were preparing to be at Mercy Hospital on January 18 when Dr. Marilyn Robinson would deliver the Evans' baby by C-section. Sonya Evans was a high risk mom with a family history of diabetes. Her first child was 9 pounds, 1 ounce. Little Jorday was being monitored, for her mom had gestational diabetes.
Mrs. Evans was grocery shopping on January 16 with her son, Gordon, 5 years old, and dad was picking up a niece to be a babysitter when the time came. Well, the
time came and Sonya was alone giving her- son a bath after stashing away all the groceries. As Mom made it to the bedroom, soon-to-be big brother jumped out of the tub, quickly dressed himself, and with instructions from Mom called his dad on his cell phone, to come quickly. "I am on my way," said Dad, who is a Port Authority supervisor at La Guardia Airport.
The new baby's mom said that she had made her son a big part of her pregnancy and taught him how important it was to be a big brother. He took on his responsibilities early on! R7 First to arrive on the '' scene was good friend and neighbor Kim Bradford Bey, who knew help was needed. Next came the Freeport village Police, then the volunteer firefighters, EMS workers and finally Dad.
In what seemed like minutes, a roomful of helpers were privy to the miracle of life - the birth of a beautiful baby girl, with locks of black hair. "My poor husband was so shocked, he couldn't say anything," said the rnom.
Baby and mom were rushed to Mercy Hospital, where the doctor waited. Police officers Joseph
Fernandez and William Luikart of the Freeport Police Department accompanied them in the ambulance to make sure they were okay. Baby Jorday had low blood sugar and an infection and was rushed into the Intensive Care Unit. She is fine now - home with her protector big brother, mom, and dad.
The consensus is that besides having her mom's maiden name (Gordon) she has her great eyes. "I think she looks like me," says Mom.
The family will never forget how wonderful the members of the village police, fire department, and EMS were. "I thank them all for the way they responded," said the mom.
Her special friend, Kim, has been a wonderful neighbor. "I am so lucky to have her," says Sonya.
The winning baby is now home and doing fine. "It is easier this time around," says Mom. Jorday is settling in and Gordon adores his baby sister, who still likes to sleep days and keep Mom and Dad up at night.
Sonya Evans comes from Princeton, New Jersey, and loves living in Freeport. She and her husband are thankful for the gifts their baby has won from Freeport merchants and will enjoy them.
