Freeport school board receives building report
by Mark IVeske
It was the physical conditions of the Freeport schools that were a primary concern of the December 7 Fi-eeport school board meeting
Pepin Acilien of JMOA, an architectural firm, explained that the state requires a capital facilities plan from all school districts every five years. Prior to this, a building condition survey must be done by a qualified engineer or architect.
Mr. Acilien explained that the purpose is to "collect information and prioritize findings," with an emphasis on health and safety issues. The state must receive this information by January, and the district uses the data to formulate a facilities plan.
Gail Perrigine then gave a power point presentation of the results of the survey. Every building was surveyed, and then rated: either excellent, satisfactory, unsatisfactory (a building or
physical feature, that has exceeded its useful life), non-functioning (does not work) and critical failure (a problem that could endanger occupant health and safety).
The survey found no critical failure or non-functioning items; however, many items were rated unsatisfactory, or beyond their useful fife, a condition of the age of many of the buildings (Columbus was built in 1914; Archer, 1928; Bay view, 1951; Giblyn, 1960; Atkinson, 1949; Dodd, 1974; FHS, 1959; the administration building is almost 100 years old!)
