Annual "Mix-It-Up" Day in Freeport brought Freeport High School I students to the Caroline G. Atkinson School, where fourth and fifth-I grade students met with the high schoolers to learn what awaits them fin a few short years. Some of the middle schoolers have siblings i already in high school, so the briefing for them was a reinforcement iof what their brothers and sisters had already told them.

Following a public hearing at Monday's village board meeting, trustees approved an amendment to the zoning ordinance allowing Golden Age Floating Zones within existing locations already zoned for apartments, businesses and industries.
Mayor William F. Glacken called the new policy "A way of making housing affordable for seniors within walking distance of downtown or the Main Street corridor."
The units would be sold as co-ops or condos.
Deputy Village Attorney Howard Colton, in his presentation of the amended zoning changes, said the Golden Age housing would be for citizens age 55 and up, though in the case of a husband or wife, only one of the spouses would need to be age 55. Children age. 19 or above could reside in the housing with their parents or grandparents.
Buildings would have a height limitation of five stories or 50 feet on a lot of at least 25,000 square feet.
Other sections of the ordinance cover size of yards, parking facilities, recreational facilities and other standards.
Mr. Colton explained that the board would have final determination on applications "on a property-by-property basis." He also explained the Housing Authority would maintain the waiting list of interested buyers, which would-be provided to the building developer and management.
In comments on the proposed amendment, \vhich received unanimous board approval at the end of the hearing, resident Kenneth Bagatelle argued the minimum age should be 60 "to conform with Nassau County" in its criteria for Golden Age housing.
But Mr, Colton said 55 was state law for the minimum age.
Mr. Bagatelle also said he had a problem with the building height, the number of parking spaces and other features of the ordinance.
Mayor Glacken explained that the housing could be less that the maximum height requirement, but those buildings three stories or higher (continued on page 2)
