Gizmo The Robot may have a silver metal body, a spinning head and bhnk-ing lights, but when it comes to talking to youngsters about the importance of walking the straight and narrow path and avoiding alcohol and substance abuse, he's all heart.
On a chilly October day, Gizmo received warm welcomes from students and faculty at the Bay view Avenue and Leo F. Giblyn elementary schools in Freeport. The robot appeared as part of the observance by the schools of "Red Ribbon Week," in which students and teachers all wore red ribbons urging students to "Show Character/Don't Do Drugs."
Based in New Jersey, and with a resume that includes appearances on TV shows, in schools across the country, and at corporate shows and international events, the robot glided along the floor, as hundreds of students, seated in a "U" formation, gasped in awe as Gizmo talked to them in a group and
one on one.
Introduced to individual students at each of the respective schools, Gizmo repeated his question, to each. "How old are you?" When the student replied. Gizmo quickly added, "Are you married?" which drew loud laughs and screams from the student as well as classmates.
Warming to his subject. Gizmo emphasized to the students that they are all "million-dollar machines," capable of great achievements as long as they keep themselves healthy and working properly.
"Red Ribbon Week" is a national campaign launched to honor the work and memory of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, an agent. with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), who was murdered in Mexico by drug dealers in 1985 after they discovered that he was an undercover law enforcement agent who had infiltrated their operation.

Mayor William Glacken and Nassau County Legislators Kevan Abrahams and Dave Denenberg took time from their busy schedules to attend. They watched as the children played games, filled their goodie bags, and picked pumpkins from a pump-
n patch that had mysteriously appeared
spirit of Halloween - and the infant class
overnight at Hi-Hello. The infants got lots of "oohs" and "ahs" as they were paraded in their baby buggies in Native-American costumes.
In the late afternoon, the children in the after-school program went for supervised trick or treating walks throughout the neighborhood. In keeping with lessons on community service, they also collected money for UNICEF.
It was a fun and safe Halloween for all the children and staff at Hi-Hello. A
