Five masked men jumped aboard the Majesty Casino boat just as it was about to leave its dock on the Nautical Mile in Freeport and robbed the boat of more than $50,000 on Saturday, October 1.
According to detectives from the Nassau County Police Department's robbery squad, at least three of the men were armed with firearms.
Freeport Police Chief Michael Woodward told The Leader that" four of the men ran onto the boat and a fifth man was right behind them. It appeared that they knew where the money was kept -in a cash or money room."
They forced entry into the room, had the-cashier remove the cash from a safe and then fled, with the cash, in a dark vehicle heading westbound Manhattan Avenue.
"The robbery took place within a matter of minutes," said Chief Woodward. Nassau County detectives determined that the robbery occurred at 7:35 p.m. There was one minor injury, when the owner of the Majesty Casino, Gary Gelriian, was poked in the ribs by one of the'robbers.
/There were 350 passengers on board the boat but "not everyone knew what
was going on," said Chief Woodward, who explained that the boat has three floors. "The robbery took place on the first floor. These passengers were told to lie down. Some individuals [on the other floors] reported they heard a commotion," he said.
Freeport police received calls from both passengers and ship employees after the robbery took place. The boat stayed in port for the rest of the evening but was back in business on Sunday, October 2.
It was reported in Newsday that the Freeport police were asked to increase police presence in the area.
"No one has asked us for more protection," said Chief Woodward. "There was security on board. We hope that in the future, more security measures can be taken, including increasing security personnel on the boat as well as when patrons board."
Chief Woodward added that residents and tourists should not be alarmed. "This is the first time this has happened. It is absolutely safe to take these boats," he said.
A joint investigation by the Nassau police Robbery Squad and Freeport Police Department is ongoing.
