MEMBERS OF THE FREEPORT BRANCH OF THE AMERICAN LEGION, including Fred Hager, Lincoln Parsons, Steve, and Albert Nicolino, arid Robert Pachas, were at the Esplanade to greet the midshipmen when th^y arrived.
Mayor Bill Glacken, along with Trustees Bill White, Jr., and Don Mauersberger, welcomed eight sailboats from the United States Naval Academy's Sail Training Squadron for the annual visit <^f the Annapolis midshipmen to Freeport. ,
For the eighth consecutive y^ar, the midshipmen have made Freeport one of their ports-of-call on their summer sail-training schedule. The eight boats were docked at the Esplanade, on the Nautical Mile (Woodcleft Avenue) directly across from the Long Island Marine Education Center^ for three-and-a-half days while the midshipmen stayed at Hofstra University and received some much needed R and R after sailing from Newport, Rhode Island.
During the dinner on Saturday evening. Commanding Officer Dick Lunsford thanked. Mayor Glacken, the trustees, the members of the Chamber of Commerce, the village employees and the people of Freeport for their warm hospitality and generosity toward the young men and vvomen who, upon "graduation, will join one of the nation's military services.
In turn, Mayor Glacken thanked the midshipmen for their commitment to serving their country with dedication and hard work and the future sacrifices they will be making to protect the United States while safeguarding freedom for all Americans.
O LIFE
Kenneth Middleton, 24, of Hempstead was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for the death of Dianna Correa-Hemandez by Nassau County Court judge Meryl Berkowitz. In addition, the defendant was sentenced to a seven-year consecutive term for the shooting, of 16-year old Michael Gillard.
"On June 21, 2004 at approxi-rnately 10:25 p.m. Kenneth Middleton fired several shots from a handgun at two males and a female who were sitting on the front porch of a house on North Columbus Avenue, Freeport," said Nassau County District Attorney Denis Dillon.
"As a result of the shooting, Diana Correa-Hemandez, 15, of Florida (a former Freeport resident) was killed and Michael Gillard, 16, of North Columbus
Avenue was struck in the leg and taken to an area hospital."
Mr. Middleton was found guilty after trial on June 23 of Murder in the Second Degree (Intentional), a Class A Felony; Assault in the Second Degree, a Class D Felony; and Assault Third Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor.
"I am thankful the judge took into account the facts, testimony and evidence and agreed with the findings of the jury and sentenced Mr. Middleton to 25 years to life," said Freeport Police Chief Michael Woodward.
"Perhaps this sentence will give him pause to think about the suffering he caused to the family and the neighborhood. I hope it deters others from using violence to remedy past greivances."
WELCOME: Trustees Bill White, Jr., and Don Mauersberger joined members of the American Legion, along with Hempstead Town Councilwoman Angle Cullin and Chamber of Commerce representatives Ed Martin and Jerri Quibell in welcoming the midshipmen to Freeport.
