The Freeport Recreation Center Sports Camp had some special guest speakers drop in on Friday, July 22: Clifton Smith (NFL linebacker for the Washington Redskins and former Syracuse University football captain) and Eddie Gordon (two-time captain playing for the Fordham University football team).
The meeting was arranged by their former Freeport High School J.V. Football
Coach Tim Halvorsen. The two former Freeport High School football standouts spoke about the importance of a good education, sacrifice and hard work as tools for success.
The enthusiastic campers asked the two star athletes many questions and were amazed at the amount of dedication that Was involved to get them where they are= today.
Thank you, Morion Greenwood!
Those are the. words on the lips of Freeport High School athletes . as practice sessions begin for the fall sports season. Mr. Greenwood is a former FHS football star who went pro, and while students are thanking him, he's thanking Freeport High School.
Now a linebacker with the NFL's Houston Texans who spent four seasons with the Miami Dolphins, he said he wanted to give back to the community and school that helped him become so successful.
So, he donated $35,000 for a weight room with rows of shiny new weight machines located" in the basement of the high school, where the Red Devils are already working out in preparation for the new season.
Last week, he returned to his alma mater to see the completed room with its recently installed equipment. The 1996 FHS graduate got a warm welcome from some football team members, and from football coach Russ Cellan, whom Morion credits with his transformation from a soccer player to a football player in 11th grade.
Accompanying Mr. Greenwood was another famed Freeport footballer - 1999 FHS grad, Clifton Smith, a linebacker for the Washington Redskins.
It's a pattern. "All of our players come back to visit," said Coach Cellan.
