PROUD CHILDREN, PARENTS, RELATIVES, FRIENDS AND STAFF gathered to celebrate Hi-Hello Child Care Center's kindergarten graduation exercises held at Freeport Recreation Center. The children prepared a program combining music and academics, showcasing the reading and math skills they had gained during the school year, using the theme, "Learning Through Music."
"Many of the children 'graduating' today have been with us since they were infants," said Joann Bousquet, executive director. "While we will miss them, we are confident that the academic and social skills they have learned in their years at Hi-Hello, have prepared them for success in their future education. Besides, we're thrilled that we will get to see some of them at our before and after-school program!"

"We know they are out there. They could be around the corner, driving their car right now and looking for another victim," said Joseph Brucia of Bellmore who's 11-year-old daughter Carlie Brucia was accosted then abducted by a man who raped and murdered her in Florida in February of 2004.
"If we know about them [sexual predators] and we let them out, aren't we responsible?" he asked. "There is an 88 percent recidivism rate. Explain to parents and children why they are being preyed upon."
Mr. Brucia was one of a eight speakers who spoke in favor of legislation sponsored by the New York State Assembly Republican Task Force on Sex Crimes Against Children & Women. The task force held a forum at the Merrick Firehouse on July 20 to raise awareness of pending legislation to support civil confinement of sexually violent predators.
The Republican minority claims that the Democratic majority in the Assembly will
not let the bill get to the floor for a vote. The bill has passed in the Republican-controlled Senate. The legislation also focuses on strengthening the state's Megan's Law . and additional measure to monitor the whereabouts of dangerous sexual predators.
According to testimony received by the Task Force, a small but extremely dangerous group of sexually violent predators suffer from a form of mental illness that makes them highly likely to engage in repeat sexual offenses. Civil confinement would be for the most dangerous sex offenders who would move to a secure facility upon completion of their prison sentence if they are still deemed to be a threat by a judge.
Assemblyman David McDonough, the vice chairman of Violence Education Task Force and a member of the Task Force on Sex Crimes Against Children and Women said, "Some offenders even admit, when they are released, they will strike again." Mr. McDonough read from a letter he had
