by Laura Schofer
Thanks to a. little ingenuity, the waters in Freeport are coming clean.
In just a little over 121 days, SPLASH (Stop Polluting Littering and Save the Harbors) has collected 82 barrels of garbage at the outflow pipe at Mill Basin thanks to a banier created out of three 30-foot docks -that have been placed at the head of Freeport Creek, along with screens to keep the garbage from slipping around the floats.
From styrofoant cups to cigarette butts, all the garbage is collected by dedicated volunteers who are there seven days a week, with their nets, to pull the sludge fi-orn the water.,
This past Monday morning The Leader visited the site with Rob Weltner, executive director of SPL./\SH. "This garbage comes from as far north as Westbury," he explained and pointed to the murky water and several bags of garbage that were just collected from the water.
"There is a drain by the Freeport Reservoir and the water mns urider Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road and is dumped iiito Mill Basin," he said. "You should see how much garbage is collected after a heavy rain."
Bill Norton, a SPLASH volunteer, said he collected "seven bags of garbage on
Friday."
Mr. Weltner added that a total of 14 bags of garbage were collected at this site over the weekend.
. *Tf it weren't for these docks it would be a mess out there," said Mr. Norton, pointing to Freeport Creek and beyond to the bay. "We'd find all of this stuff out in the marshes."
Luckily, with a little help from the Town of Hempstead, which provided the docks, and from Louis DiGrazia, superintendent of Public Works for the Village of Freeport, who facilitated the project, that garbage is no longer floating in the water.
"We've been hying to get this done for years and it's great when a!! levels of government work together. Rob Fascine [a village engineer] helpedWith the design, Lou acted as a liaison between the individual who owns some of the private property [by the basin] and the village-owned property. Ron Masters [Town of Hempstead commissioner of waterways] also gave us help and encouragement" said Mr, Weltner.
He added that this kind of project helps make the job a little easier for volunteers out on the SPLASH btiat. "Last year we had the area cleaned up and then the winter came along and trashed everything.
"The north winds blow all winter long. This will help us pick up {continued on page 15)
