"The quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to your commitment to excellence," stated Vince Lombardi. A number of varsity athletes were recognized at the Thirty-Seventh Annual Honors Program at Freeport High School.
The Adelaide Aims Memorial Award was given by Wendy Aims Rowe and her husband and daughter in memory of her mother, Adelaide Aims (Class of '43). Rebecca Callahan met the criteria of being a worthy senior who maintained a high scholastic average and showed great athletic ability.
Rebecca graduated eighth in the Class of 2005, played varsity volleyball and softball and served as a member of the Captains and Leaders Club, National Honor Society and peer tutoring groups. She earned All Division status in softball and was chosen Student of the Month by the Rotary Club. She will enter Utica College in the fall.
Daniel Okobi, the Class of 2005's valedictorian, was awarded the Jerry Bagatelle Scholar-Athlete Award. This scholarship was given in memory of Jerry Bagatelle, one of the co-founders and president for nine years of the Fathers and Boosters Club at FHS by his son and wife. Danny will be
entering Harvard University in September. A member of the varsity tennis team for four years, he is a National Merit Finalist, member of the National Honor Society, and a peer tutor. A true Renaissance man, he is also involved with the Select Chorale, Sinfonetta and Marching Band.
Thomas Cheska was an English teacher, lacrosse coach and football coach at FHS from 1969 until his death from cancer at age 43 in 1989. As a teacher and coach, he had a great rapport with children of all ages. Esther Lopez and Cassandra Medard were the two recipients of this scholarship.
Esther served as president of the Class of 2005, president of the National Honor Society and as a peer tutor. She was a co-captain of the girls varsity lacrosse team and will be attending Columbia University in the fall. She is graduating fifth in the class and was part of the winning Long Island Challenge Team. Cassandra was the unsung heroine on the girls' lacrosse team and an active.member of the winter track and soccer teams. Three varsity letters have earned her a spot on the Ironman Wall. A member of the National Honor Society and a peer tutor, Cassandra will be attending Syracuse University in September. She is graduating tenth in the Class of 2005.
