The team from Freeport High School, competing for the first time in the Newsday/Cablevision Long Island Challenge on Channel 12, defeated the Suffolk County-winning team, Walt Whitman, to win the Long Island Challenge Competition June 12.
"Since this was our first time in the Challenge," noted social studies teacher Joseph Powers, who had. selected the members of the team, "We didn't know what to expect. The team really did almost no formal preparation for the contest."
Other teams that Freeport played, including former first-place Jericho, were
past Challenge players.
Ours was the only team with four girls on it," noted Mr. Powers. The team also reflected the diversity of the Freeport School District, with members from various backgrounds participating.
Members were Daniel Okobi, Jr., Sarah Mahon, Marilyn Bendel and Yan Mei Luo. Esther Lopez was the alternate. All members are graduating seniors. ,

by Eileen Dever
George Dewey Smalls grew up in Freeport, attended Freeport High School, played basketball, went to the University of Delaware on a sports scholarship, graduated and finally returned to work for his community and Nassau County. A longtime Freeport resident, he has now achieved a different kind of notoriety: He is Freeport/Baldwin Father of the Year.
A single father of four-year-old Nya, Dewey Smalls was nominated by Joyce F. Scott, a friend and colleague. Mrs. Scott, librarian at Hemsptead High School, worked on the Hempstead Scholarship Fund with Mr. Smalls. She says that he is an example for single fathers.
"He epitomizes 21st Century single parenting. He is actively involved in the day-to-day process of child-rearing. He is diligent in ensuring that Nya is a well-rounded child." As a single mother
she adds, "I know that is not easy."
Nya is bright and social and quick to give her Dad a smooch and a hug. She loves to go to the park with her Dad. She is a good artist drawing her big Dad, smiley Mom and Uttle Nya. She likes to play soccer and has favorite fish.
Mr. Smalls' hopes and dreams for his little girl are that she is able to grow up where violence is not an issue - that she be exposed to all cultures and make good choices in life.
Dewey Smalls works as program coordinator for the Nassau County Department of Economic
Development, responsible for funding from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) provided by HUD and dispersed by Nassau County.
Involved in community projects, he talked about a recent step in the revi-talization of Freeport - the completion of the Mews Main Street project, space for new development and
