Just before midnight on May 28, Freeport police found the body of a 45-year-old-woman who was allegedly strangled by her 12-year-old daughter after a "dispute between mother and child," Freeport PoUce Chief Michael Woodward told TTie Leader. The incident occurred in the mother's home in Freeport.
"The police were called to the scene by the 12-year-old's older sister," said Chief Woodward. The older sister had received a telephone call from the girl after the incident occurred and came over to the house.
"The woman wasn't breathing when the police arrived," continued Chief Woodward.
The mother was taken by Nassau County police ambulance to the Nassau University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead by staff doctors at 12:43 a.m. on May 29.
According to a press release issued by the Nassau County Police Department, the Medical Examiner's office confirmed that the cause of death was strangulation.
The child will be placed in protective custody and charged as a juvenile delinquent in family court at a later date. The police are not releasing the name of mother or child. Chief Woodward added that there was no record of any problems with the child in the past.
In other news, 16-year-old Aaron Clark of Baldwin pled guilty to Murder in the Second
Degree, Intentional, on Thursday, May 19.
According to District Attorney Denis Dillon, "On Sunday, October 10, 2004, after an argument with his mother, Aaron Clark stabbed her with a kitchen knife multiple times, stole money and her off-duty handgun, changed his clothes and then came back to finish her off. He then went to buy bleach, gloves and plastic bags and headed to a Great Neck park where he dug a shallow grave. Aaron's mother, Gail Clark, also of Baldwin, was a captain in the New York City Department of Corrections."
Jeffrey Groder, Aaron's attorney, told The Leader that his client pled guilty because the judge. Acting Supreme Court Justice William C. Donnino, "was considering giving him more time." He received the maximum sentence for a juvenile offender; 15 years to life. However he could have received 25 years to life because he was tried as an adult. As part of the condition of his plea, he agreed to waive his right to appeal.
Mr. Groder added that Aaron had a history of emotional problems. "He was in several different programs and was either released or let go because of his behavior," said Mr. Groder.
Aaron was in family court just a few months before the fatal incident that took place last October. "He was brandishing a knife at his mother but nothing was done," said Mr. Groder.
