Let there be peace
by Laura Schofer
Last Tuesday, May 17, the residents of Freeport voted down the Freeport school budget. The budget was defeated with 1,180 against it and 1,125 in favor.
The expenditure budget was for $120,936,024, an increase of $8,163,245 or an 7.24 percent increase from the 2004-2005 budget. However, owning to an increase in state aid for Freeport schools, the tax levy would have increased by 5.99 percent.

The same budget will go up for a re-vote on June 14. Residents may vote from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Voting will take place at Atkinson, Columbus, Bayview, Archer and Giblyn Schools and the Freeport Community Center.
"We are presenting the same budget-because we feel it is financially and educationally responsible," said Mr. Kuncham.
"I am personally and deeply disappointed for the children," said Board of Education member Michael Raab. "We could lose programs that will have effects on [high school] students' portfolios when they apply to college. The colleges don't know we're on austerity," he said.
Carmen Pineyro, president of the school board, did not return our telephone calls for comment.
Mr. Kuncham added that if the budget is defeated a second time, the school district will be forced to go on an austerity budget. This means that the state permits the district to increase its budget by "3.24 percent. This cap means the district will have to cut $3.8 million from the budget," he said.
In the May 12 edition of The Leader Mr. Kuncham cited some of the biggest impacts to this year's proposed budget including an 11 percent increase in pensions, a 15 percent increase for health insurance, a 20 percent increase in utilities and a 15 percent increase in
