THE FREEPORT MEWS - then and now
Dignitaries attend Freeport Mews dedication

by Laura Schofer
"This is an important step forward to revitalize our downtown," said Freeport's Mayor William F. Glacken at the May 5 ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Main Street Mews.
This new building, in the heart of downtown Freeport, is the first new construction in 50 years in this part of town.
The building houses 16 units of live/work loft spaces and a ground floor retail space located on South Main Street, within walking distance of the Long Island Rail Road.
The lofts, on the second and third floor of the building, rent between $1,700 and $2,600 a month, with the average at about $2,000 per month. They average about 1,133 square feet and contain a master bedroom with walk-in closet and full bath on an upper mezzanine level. Underneath the mezzanine level is a loft style area that features
an entry, an ofBce/den, a utility/bath room and the kitchen. The main studio has 17-foot high ceilings. The developer, Ftancis Greenburger, the chairman of Time Equities, said "this marks a new era for Freeport." He said that these units were built with artists in mind because "we watch where artists move in and we see how they turn communities around. It's happened in New York and from coast to coast. They are a magnet for new development. Artists are good for business and they are good for communities."
This is the first project of its kind here in Nassau County. "Visionary" is what Mr. Greenburger called the village's plan to renovate its downtown.
Mayor Glacken said "This is just the beginning." He added that Plaza West will break ground sometime in the Fall of 2005 and that over the next three years of his administration he will focus on downtown revitalization and along the Northeast corridor of town.
"I want to make it clear that this is not

the end, it's just the beginning," said Mayor Glacken.
This project was developed as a public/private partnership. Time Equities invested about $3 million into this project after Freeport was able to purchase the burned-out building for $200,000 with funds from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds provided by the federal government and dispersed by Nassau County. Ellen Kelly, executive director of Freeport's Community Development Agency, also acquired a $220,000 grant from the Empire State Developinent Corporation.
Federal, state, county and local agencies all pitched in to make the Main Street Mews a reality. "This was truly a team effort," said Mayor Glacken.
Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy, along with state Assemblywoman Earlene Hooper; Executive Tom Legislators Kevan Denenberg and Hempstead Town Councilwomen Angle Cullin and Dorothy Goosby all attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
