The Freeport Board of Education's Planning/action/budget meeting of March 16 was primarily concerned with the 2003-2004 New York State School Report Card, and the news was good on the elementary level but less so on the secondary.
Robert Harris, assistant superintendent for curriculum, school improvement, professional development and planning, gave a power point presentation with the numbers: The district overall is "in good standing" in terms of accountability.
In fourth grade English Language Arts, the district is at 84 percent level 3 or 4 (meeting or exceeding state standards), five percentage points above last year and 20 above the state average. The individual schools were as follows: Archer, 73 percent (down 2 percent); Bayview, 91 percent (up 14); Giblyn, 89 percent (up 6) and New Visions 85 percent (up
27).
In fourth grade math the district was 94 percent level 3 or 4, up 4 percentage points from last year and 15 above the state average. The breakdown by school: Archer, 95 percent (up 2 percent); Bayview, 96 percent (unchanged); Giblyn, 92 percent (up 15) and New Visions, 100 percent (up 4).
In eighth grade ELA, Dodd Middle School is listed as a "School in Need of Improvement," and indeed, 42 percent scored level 3 or 4, down from 45 the previous year. In math, the school was at 51 percent, up from 43 in 2002-03.
Freeport High School is listed as a "School Requiring Academic Progress" in the areas of ELA and math; 68 percent recorded a passing grade (65 or better) on the English Regents, an improvement of eight points; 84 percent passed Math A and 64 percent Math B, an improvement of 30 points in both cases.
