A busy week for Freeport's Bravest
FREEPORT FIREHGHTERS attack the Columbus Avenue blaze.
It has been a busy two weeks for The Freepoft Fire Department. They responded to four fires between January 28 and February 13.
The first fire took place on Friday, January 28, at a private residence located at 177 Claurome Place. Chief of Department John Maguire arrived within two minutes of the call. Hose 3 (213)'was the first engine on the scene. Members from Hose 1 and an offi-i cer from Hose 4 stretched and operated the first hose line. Three hose lines were used at this fire as well. Members of Truck Co. 1 performed operations at the scene including ventilation and searching for fire and occupants.
On February 10, the Baldwin Fire Department requested mutual aid for a house fire on Schumann Place off Centennial Avenue. Hose 5 (215), Hose 1 (211), Truck Co. 1 (218) operated with the Baldwin Fire Department. Emergency Rescue 9 was on standby at Baldwin Fire Headquarters.
Early Sunday morning, February 13, at 1:56 a.m., the Freeport Fire Department was called to a reported house fire at
324 North Columbus Avenue. Fire communications reported that there may be occupants trapped; Occupants heard the screams of a resident. Rose Brown, 75. ,
Engine Co. 216 arrived at 1:59 a.m. just three minutes after the alarm was transmitted. Flames were already coming out of the second floor windows.
Police officers at the scene notified the Fire Department personnel that every one was out. of the house but there was a severely burned female victim, Rose Brown, on the front lawn.
She was transported to Nassau University Medical Center to their bum unit by the Nassau County Ambulance Bureau and Freeport police officers. Mrs. Brown suffered from second and third degree bums over 60 percent of her body. Her condition is considered grave.
Members of 216 and 211 stretched and operated the first hose line into the building and quickly knocked down the fire. Members of Truck Co. 1 performed truck operations and members from 212, 213 and 214 stretched other hose lines. Emergency Rescue 9 set up a first

aid station tb treat any -other injured people. Fortunately, there were none. .
The - fire was - extinguished quickly by approximately 40 firefighters and four pieces of apparatus led by Chief John Maguire of the Freeport Fire Department. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and is being investigated by the Nassau County Fire Marshal's office as well as the Arson/Bomb Squad.
On Sunday afternoon, Febmary 13, shortly after 2 p.m.. Assistant Chief Allen Grosser was leaving Truck Co. quarters on Church Street when he noticed smoke coming from 51 Church Street. He contacted Fire Communications and transmitted a "working building fire." All Freeport fire units operated at this scene.
All of the above operations were under the command of Chief of Department John Maguire. Chief Maguire told The Leader he is very proud of the members of the Freeport Fire Department for risking their lives and taking time from their families and jobs to serve the residents of Freeport.
